Harbour Lights: Stillness, Movement and the Quiet Stories of Granton Harbour

There’s a gentle hush that settles over Granton Harbour - a place where the world seems to slow and the water holds its own quiet stories. For me, this harbour is more than a backdrop; it’s a home from home, shaped by tides, weather and the steady rhythm of boats coming and going.

“Harbour Lights” was born from times spent launching the St Ayles skiff from the slip, oars dipping into the cool water, the boat gliding out into open space. There’s a moment, just as the hull leaves the shore, when everything feels suspended: the city behind you, the horizon ahead and only the soft pull of the tide beneath. It’s in these moments - between movement and stillness - that I find the heart of my work.

This series is a meditation on peace and pace. Some paintings capture the gentle motion of boats drifting across the harbour, their reflections shimmering and alive. Others hold a sense of deep stillness: the quiet before dawn, the hush after the last boat has moored, the subtle play of light on water and stone. I’m drawn to the way Granton Harbour invites us to pause, to breathe and to notice the beauty in the everyday.
